To start off, we all value our data privacy and with such great tools on board as Find My iPhone and Activation Lock we can be sure that not a single piece of our personal information gets into the hands of evil people. These tools work similar for both, an iPhone and an Apple Watch, and this is the versatility we need! The capabilities range from precisely locating your device to wiping your data remotely.
Apple has introduced the Activation Lock as a part of the Find My iPhone tool in Apple Watch with the watchOS 2. That made possible for the user to lock other devices in question, which are not yours but still connected via your Apple ID. And if someone would try to wipe everything off your phone or watch while being attached to your Apple ID, with this feature it becomes impossible. Not only will it block the actions of the thieves, but also the add-on will make the phone worthless, as they won’t be able to resell it.
How Do I Check if the Activation Lock Is On?
Since it rolled out to Apple smartwatch platform some time ago with the watchOS 2, the chances are your Apple Watch already has it enabled. But just in case, we’ll show you two ways of how you can check if it’s turned on.
In the first option, go to Apple Watch app on your iPhone, click on My Watch tab and then tap on the icon. These will be an info button, press that and choose to Find My Apple Watch. If you can see the location of your watch, then it’s undeniably enabled.
Using Apple Watch
The second option is useful if your iPhone is not handy, this is when you should go to the iCloud in your Apple Watch, then tap on the Find iPhone and from the selection of the device try finding your watch, if it’s there, then the Activation Lock is on.
How to Turn off the Activation Lock?
If you decided on selling your Apple Watch and want to reboot it, you would need to disable the Activation Lock (AL) feature first. Because you no longer need to use the iCloud security system for this watch. There are several ways you can do it, so we’ll cover both of them. Here’s how you do it!
Disable AL via iCloud on your Mac
Go to iCloud from the browser, log in and choose Settings. From there, go to My Devices, select your watch and press X to remove it from the list. That’s it; you’re done here!
Disable AL via Apple Watch app on your iPhone
Go to Active Watch> Info> Unpair Apple Watch. There you’ll have to choose between sticking with your cellular plan or not, and after log in again to your Apple ID to turn off the Activation Lock. Simple!
