First off, before selling your Mac, you want to make sure nothing is left behind, either on the hard drive or iCloud and iTunes. Today, leaked private information can become a severe issue for the rightful owner if the other person will consider taking advantage of it, and you don’t want that, right?
The good news is, resetting your Mac is pretty straightforward, but you have to follow the steps we will discuss shortly carefully. Our simple guide applies to all Macs, even to the most sophisticated laptop out there. Whether or not you are about to sell your computer or just move to another device, it’s an absolute must-have to know how to reset your Mac. For the fact, even if you will be giving it away to your relatives or friends just for occasional use – we’ll tell you how to log off all the services in the system.
Follow This Easy Guide on How to Reset Your Laptop
With this guide on hand, you will be able to reboot your device and make it as good as new. Just make sure to follow the order, because the first thing is the most important for the regular user, namely the backup of all your info. This should be done before you reboot your system, in this way you won’t lose valuable information. Check this out!
1. Make a Backup
If you already have your brand-new Mac and want to sell the old one, then the first thing you need to do is to create a backup and then transfer it to your new device – it’s super simple! However, if you didn’t get your new computer just yet, then you don’t want to rush things here. In this case, just wait till you get one and proceed to backing up your info. Surely, if there’s nothing on your Mac that needs to be saved – you are good to go and jump straight to the next step!
Quick note: you can always use cloud storages to at least save some of your information there.
2. Log off Your iTunes, iCloud, and iMessage
This is very important. You should make sure to deauthorize your computer from all the services before selling your Mac so no one will have access to your accounts. Here’s how to sign out of iTunes, iCloud, and iMessage one by one.
When opened choose Account on the menu bar. Then Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer – as easy as that!
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click on the iCloud icon, and then press the Sign Out button.
As for the iMessage, go to the app, choose Messages > Preferences, then click Accounts. Select your iMessage account, and then click Sign Out.
3. Wipe out Your Hard Drive & Reinstall the Operating System
After you are done dealing with the first two steps, you can get down to cleaning the hard drive on your Mac or MacBook and installing fresh macOS. First, remove drive data to bring your laptop to an unspoiled factory state and only then reinstall the operating system, not the other way round! To get started with the last step, follow our guide below.
- Go to macOS Recovery. For this one, restart your computer.
- Choose Disk Utility option and then click Continue.
- Click on your device that will be likely named as Macintosh HD & press Erase.
- Then, fill out the fields(name and format).
- Name: Put in Macintosh HD.
- Format: Select Journaled or APFS.
- Scheme: Pick GUID Partition Map. Note that not all Macs have this one.
- Click on the Erase button.
Then, just press quit Disk Utility, and after that, you’ll be able to reinstall you macOS! And to do so, go again to macOS Recovery, then follow these steps:
- Pick Reinstall macOS from the Utilities window.
- Press Continue and select your disk.
- To make sure you are eligible to reinstall the new operating system, the system might ask for your Apple ID.
- Choose Install.
